Job Description:
Overview The Orthopaedic Cast Technician is responsible for
applying and removing multiple types of splints and casts on
patients with fractures, extreme sprains, and torn tendons/muscles.
Orders supplies, maintains cast room/bay areas, cleans casting
equipment, and assists the supervising provider or nurse as needed.
Provides immobilization and continuing care for Orthopaedic
patients. Develops a strong working knowledge of the
musculoskeletal system and in-depth knowledge of multiple types of
current forms of immobilization including casts and splints.
Qualifications Certifications: Orthopaedic Technologist Certified
(OTC) within 1 year - National Board for Certification in
Orthopaedic Technologists (NBCOT); Registered Orthopedic
Technologist (ROT) within 1 year - American Society of Orthopedic
Professionals (ASOP); Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days -
American Heart Association (AHA), Education: Certificate of
Completion, Work Experience: Orthopaedic Responsibilities Provides
quality Orthopaedic care in the Cast Rooms for patients requiring
any/all forms of immobilization. Responsible for applying,
removing, and assessing the need for change of all types or
Orthopaedic casts/splints/immobilization devices. Coordinates the
cast room procedures and training programs as directed by Patient
Care Manager or Nursing Supervisor. Develops training programs and
provides continued education related to casting skills. Functions
as a Medical Assistant III and alternately rotates cast room to
floor work responsibilities. Reviews patient x-ray's with providers
as deemed necessary. Coordinates treatment of patients needing
special immobilization devices and works closely with the staff to
ensure that these devices are appropriately applied and worn.
Serves as a resource for staff and patients with problems related
to casts or splints. Assists in the performance of procedures
including setting up aseptic fields for suturing, etc. Educates
patients and families regarding application and wearing of Orthotic
Immobilization Devices. Orders, receives, and stores supplies and
materials needed to run the Cast Room. Cleans and stocks all Cast
Rooms. Assists in the cleaning and sterilization of instruments.
Performs routine maintenance on casting equipment and ensure
cleanliness and safety. Rooming Patients (Taking vitals, going
through medication/allergies etc.) Assisting providers with minor
procedures Stocking/closing down rooms Ordering DME, Housekeeping,
and dressing supplies In-basket: casting/splinting issues Removing
splints/casts, dressing applications, staple and suture removals
Applying splints/casts Prepping unsterile instruments to be sent
out to SPD DME fittings Collects and processes specimens accurately

compensation range for this position is $15.8per hour - $25.6per
hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for
the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual
compensation offered a candidate will be dependent on a variety of
factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience,
qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and
