NIHSS required Must-Have: Level 1 trauma experience, previous
travel experience, prior experience working on a dedicated neuro
unit Description: The unit has 54 beds, including semi-private
rooms. Nurse-to-patient ratios for day shift are 1:4-5, and for
night shift are 1:5-6. Common patient diagnoses include stroke,
spine surgery, seizures, brain tumors, head injuries, and other
neuroscience conditions. Nurses are required to titrate
medications, including a heparin drip based on PTT, and must have
experience with such medications. A charge nurse is present 24/7
and typically does not take an assignment unless staffing ratios
require it. A house supervisor is also available 24/7. Patient care
techs are present with ratios of 1:9-10 during the day and evening
shifts, and 1:10-12 on night shifts. High-flow oxygen is used only
for stable patients when necessary. Nurses do not need to interpret
telemetry strips, as telemetry technicians are available on the
unit. The unit operates on a 12-hour shift schedule, with requests
for scheduling taken into consideration where possible. Every other
weekend requirement applies, with Saturday and Sunday counted as
the weekend. Holidays are also required every other rotation.
Floating may occur, with travelers typically floating to general
units where they have skills competency. Nurses are expected to
cover tattoos while on duty, and only ear piercings are permitted.
The orientation period includes training with an educator and a
preceptor while caring for patients.
