Description: The Surgical Acute unit has 63 beds, comprised of
private and observation beds. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 4-5
patients per RN during the day and 5-6 patients per RN at night.
Common patient diagnoses include post-operative surgical cases,
trauma, overflow medical issues, dressing changes, wound care, IV
therapy, pain management, drains, NG tubes, central lines, and TPN.
RNs are not required to titrate drips; only Heparin is titratable.
There are Charge Nurses and House Supervisors on each shift, with
Charge Nurses not taking patient assignments. Patient Care
Technicians assist with vitals, accu checks, activities of daily
living, turning, and ambulation, with a ratio of 7-10 patients per
PCT during the day and 10-15 patients per PCT at night. RNs do not
manage vents but they handle CPAP and high-flow oxygen. Telemetry
monitor techs are available; RNs are not required to read their own
strips. The unit operates on a rotation of every other weekend and
every other holiday. Travelers may be the first to float and will
float to units with the same level of experience. Scrub color is
flexible, and any color is acceptable. Unit-specific orientation
includes two shifts with a preceptor and one additional shift for
electronic charting and professional orientation. 5 Benefits of
