Certifications: BLS, NIHSS Must-Have: Level 1 trauma experience,
previous travel experience, prior experience working on a dedicated
neuro unit Description: The unit has 54 beds with 2 semi-private
rooms. Nurse to patient ratios are 1:4-5 during day shifts and
1:5-6 during night shifts. Common diagnoses include stroke, spine
surgery, seizures, brain tumors, head injuries, and patients with
various neurological and some medical conditions. RNs are required
to titrate drips, including a heparin titrated drip based on PTT. A
charge nurse is available 24/7; they typically do not take an
assignment unless staffing is short and ratios are compromised.
House supervisors are also available 24/7. Patient care technicians
are available with ratios of 1:9-10 during the day and evening and
1:10-12 overnight. RNs may troubleshoot respiratory equipment, with
limited COVID cases in the unit. Telemetry is monitored house-wide;
nurses do not need to read their own strips. Shifts are typically
12 hours, and scheduling requests are considered as staffing
allows. Every other weekend commitment is required, as well as
every other holiday. Floating may be required based on staffing
needs, and RNs will only perform skills they are competent in
outside of their assigned unit. There are no specific scrub color
requirements, but tattoos must be covered while on duty, and only
ear piercings are permitted. Orientation includes training on
computer systems and unit practices with a preceptor for patient's
